Guide to buying a new MP3 player

Buying an MP3 player can be quite challenging considering the wide variety of features now available. This guide brought to you by Moneysupermarket.com should help choosing the correct MP3 player for you seem less daunting.

Features to take into consideration: Weight and size: There are big differences between mp3 players in terms of size and weight. They range in weight from around 40 grams for smaller players, to over 300 grams for a large multimedia mp3 player.

Battery life: Battery life can vary between several hours for a power hungry MP3, to over 40 hours for some MP3 players. Some smaller players can use power from the connection to your computer (USB) and do not require a separate charger or batteries, whilst this is good sometimes when you are away from your computer, you may find yourself stuck without a charger.

PC Interface: This is the connection interface between your music player and your computer. Most MP3 players use the common USB connection. USB 2.0 or FireWire connections however are considerably faster than standard USB. Making players compatible with these interfaces are more desirable if you intend on using them often.

Memory size: The larger the capacity, the greater the number of songs you will be able to store on your player. The memory size is usually stated in Megabytes (MB). As a rough guide, an 8 GB MP3 can hold roughly 2000 songs. Obviously the songs stored can be erased in order to make new space when you feel the need for some different music.

Other functions: The most common auxiliary functions on MP3 players are an FM radio tuner and a hand-held Dictaphone recording function allowing you to record short conversations. On some more complex players the radio function can even be used to record your favourite station in MP3 format, although these models can cost considerably more.

An iPod is a good piece of equipment to possess and does not have to cost a fortune. Some cheap mp3 players can be found and compared at Moneysupermarket MP3 players
